sub|sist «suhb SIHST», intransitive verb.
1. to keep alive; live: »

People in the far north subsist chiefly on fish and meat.

2. to continue to be; exist: »

Many superstitions still subsist. A club cannot subsist without members.

3. Philosophy. a) to stand as fact or truth; hold true. b) to be logically necessary, probable, or conceivable.
4. Obsolete. to continue in a condition or position; remain as such.
